After going hands-on with so many alternatives, I can confidently say its most underrated feature is its boring predictability. What I’ve realized is that Google News’ biggest strength doesn’t lie in its algorithm, personalization, and aggregation. After scouting the Play Store, seeing what the world has to offer, and playing around with what seemed promising, I came back to Google News. Those are two things Google News has almost perfected. Second, it’s everything from the RSS feed straight to your face, with no algorithmic input or personalization. In a world where we no longer rely on newspapers, getting hyperlocal news has become incredibly difficult.
According to a 2020 study in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, Google News prioritizes local news outlets when individuals search for keywords specifically related to topics of local interest. It now uses a card format for grouping related news stories, and as summarized by Engadget, “doesn’t look like a search results page anymore”, removing text snippets and blue links. In total, Google News aggregates content from more than 20,000 publishers. As of 2014, Google News was watching more than 50,000 news sources worldwide. News experiences across Google are built to help you easily find news from a diversity of trusted sources so you can stay up-to-date and informed on the stories that matter most to you.

Google News needs a renewal
Google announced that it would instead focus on “Google One Pass, a platform that enables publishers to sell content and subscriptions directly from their own sites”. These pages indicated that the search covered “Any time”, but did not include the archive and only included recent news. In early 2010, Google removed direct access to the archive search from the main Google News page, advanced news search page and default search results pages.
God knows I tried, but I still couldn’t find a news app that felt as comprehensive and as direct as Google News. I also experimented with a few apps that let you build your own news feed using RSS, like Feedly — there are plenty of such apps on the Play Store. The content density was just right, and so were the news types and overall quality (which I presumed would get better over time). I don’t know how broadly Google is showing these “trending topics” AI headlines yet, but it seems the company is testing them beyond the Google Discover news feed, too. I’ve seen fewer examples of egregious clickbait, partly because Google Discover is now serving me quite a few unadulterated news stories alongside its AI ones — though it does cut off their genuine headlines far too quickly, making many tough to read. Like I explained last month, these AI headlines are akin to a bookstore replacing the covers of the books it puts on display — only here, the “bookstore” is Observations on veterinary toxicology the news tab that appears when you swipe right on the homescreen of a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel phone, and the “cover” might be a AI-generated lie instead of the truth.

Top_news() returns the top stories for the selected country and language that are defined in GoogleNews class. This package uses the RSS feed of the Google News. It is different from the usual Google search that we use on a daily basis (sorry DuckDuckGo, maybe next time). Most likely, you know already that Google has its own news service. I’m particularly frustrated when I see bait-and-switch headlines on Verge stories, of course, and worried they’re taking away our ability to market our own work. I found another that claimed to be about a GPU maker commenting on the RAM shortage; it linked instead to a Digitimes story about a RAM maker. But Google’s AI has no clue what parts of these stories are new, relevant, significant, or true, and it can easily confuse one story for another. “I’d encourage people to click on stories and read them, and not trust what Google is spoon-feeding them.” For example, Google’s AI claimed last week that “US reverses foreign drone ban,” citing and linking to this PCMag story for the news.
