The letter as we know it today achieved its final form after adoption into the Latin alphabet. (1) Ss is normally voiceless (pass, assess, dismiss; message, passage, possible), but it is sometimes voiced in medial position (brassiere, dessert, dissolve, hussar, scissors, possess), and smartytrade reviews optionally in hussy. (2) Silent final s in French-derived words (corps, fracas) is often pronounced in the plural (two army corps, frequent fracas). (1) A final e sometimes distinguishes voiced and voiceless s (tens/tense), but the distinction is rarely reliable (contrast chase/phase) compared with voiceless -ce (hens/hence, advise/advice) and voiced -ze (dose/doze). In several Western Romance languages, like Spanish and French, the final ⟨s⟩ is the usual mark of plural nouns. In Portuguese, it may represent the voiceless palato-alveolar fricative /ʃ/ in most dialects when syllable-final, and ʒ in European Portuguese Islão (Islam) or, in many sociolects of Brazilian Portuguese, esdrúxulo (proparoxytone).

In other Italic alphabets (Venetic, Lepontic), the letter could be represented as a zig-zagging line of any number between three and six strokes. The (angular) S-shape composed of three strokes existed as a variant of the four-stroke letter Σ already in the epigraphy of Western Greek alphabets, and the three and four strokes variants existed alongside one another in the classical Etruscan alphabet. The original name of the letter "Sigma" may have been san, but due to the early history of the Greek epichoric alphabets, "san" came to be identified as a separate letter, Ϻ.

FOWLER’S Modern English Usage (1983) has recommended the plural gallowses if needed, and gives inningses as a BrE alternative to innings (compare AmE singular inning; plural innings, in baseball). (1) The digraph sh represents a distinct English phoneme, a voiceless alveolar fricative /ʃ/, which mostly arose from palatalization of early s, whether in OLD ENGLISH or Old French. (5) Other endings preceded by palatalized s are -ual, -ure, voiced as in casual, visual, usual, measure, leisure, but voiceless in fissure, censure, tonsure, sensual. (6) Erase, eraser, erasure are normally voiced in BrE but voiceless in AmE.
In many Romance languages, it also represents the voiced alveolar or voiced dental sibilant /z/, as in Portuguese mesa (table). It is the most common letter for the first letter of a word in the English language. Due to yod-coalescence, it may also represent a voiceless palato-alveolar fricative /ʃ/, as in ‘sugar’, or a voiced palato-alveolar fricative /ʒ/, as in ‘measure’. Ancient Greek did not have a /ʃ/ "sh" phoneme, so the derived Greek letter Sigma (Σ) came to represent the voiceless alveolar sibilant /s/. The letter is also used in Lakota, Cheyenne, Myaamia and Cree (in dialects such as Moose Cree), Classical Malay (until end of 19th century) and some African languages such as Northern Sotho and Songhay. The alphabet is not used natively to write the language for which the Syriac alphabet is used instead.

The early Latin alphabet adopted sigma, but not san, as Old Latin did not have a /ʃ/ "sh" phoneme. The Western Greek alphabet used in Cumae was adopted by the Etruscans and Latins in the 7th century BC, and over the following centuries, it developed into a range of Old Italic alphabets, including the Etruscan alphabet and the early Latin alphabet. Herodotus reported that "san" was the name given by the Dorians to the same letter called "Sigma" by the Ionians.

See the Kashubian alphabet article on Wikipedia for more, and S for development of the glyph itself. The Kashubian orthography is based on the Latin alphabet. There are, however, a few words in which ss may – optionally – be pronounced /z/ (e.g. Fussel, Massel, quasseln, Schussel). Again, this tendency is stronger with English than with other source languages (cf. e.g. Spaghetti with /ʃp/). Stem-initial st and sp are pronounced /ʃt/ and /ʃp/ in native words. /s/ is usually retained in recent borrowings from English (e.g. Sex), to a lesser degree also in recent borrowings from other languages (e.g. Salsa).

In 1666, the first proprietary Governor of the Province of New Jersey, Philip Carteret, granted 12 new settlers from Massachusetts a 100 square mile allotment of land that was later founded as the townships of Piscataway and Woodbridge. Piscataway Township was formed on December 17, 1666, and officially incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798, as part of the state’s initial group of 104 townships. As of the 2020 United States census, the township’s population was 60,804, an increase of 4,760 (+8.5%) from the 2010 census count of 56,044, which in turn reflected an increase of 5,562 (+11.0%) from 50,482 at the 2000 census. Carroll’s team, of course, last reached this stage against the Patriots in the 2014 season, falling to the Patriots in crushing fashion with Russell Wilson’s goal-line interception to Malcolm Butler.
